Last month, I made the case that a Romney VP could be McCain's best chance of McCain winning Colorado or Michigan....give one of those states to McCain and the firewall is blown.
And on top of Mccain having nothing to lose (already a big underdog), Romney could be a good "attack dog".....he can be a dick and come off smooth at the same time....that's a good asset for a desperate mccain.
Keeler and I drove down to Columbus yesterday (details to be posted) and talked at length about Romney, who I agree is the top VP prospect. McCain needs to throw the conservative base a bone by picking someone they like. Plus, Romney might be able to lend some economics gravitas to McCain's ticket. Ben made a good point that McCain can't wait to react to who Obama picks and needs to make his announcement soon. I agree that it is a better strategy.
All that said, I really hope they pick Romney because it would be such a boring ticket. I though Romney was just awful on the stump in the primary and came off as a stiff in the debates. Maybe he energizes Mormons and is able to raise some money, but I don't think he helps McCain deliver one state. Plus, Romney wants the job. No one wants that job. That alone should make McCain suspicious.

For one, I was praying that he'd pick Crisp Crist. I mean an unnaturally tan, gay-rumor magnet would have sunk that ticket. And Florida, Shmorida. I don't think Obama can win there anyhow.
About Romney specifically:
I don't like it cause: I think he's actually McCain's strongest option, I do think he energizes the base. He gets the CEO-wanna-be vote in spades too. And he looks conservative.
I do like this pick cause: One of the major themes of this election will be changing the way things are done in Washington, and while Mitt is not a Washington insider, he is a card-carrying slime-ball.
I said it months ago, but in those early states Huckabee and McCain ran respectable campaigns. Giuliani and Thompson, while lame, hesitated to go too negative. Romney alone was thrashing around in the mucky muck.
Plus, as we witnessed in the debates, he is a bright guy, but man can he get pissy. And when the mask does slip, it's ugly.
I don't/do like it cause: Mitt is fucking ruthless. He'd bite the head off 50 bald eaglets to get on this ticket.
On one hand this means that all the Obama smear-innuendo may get flamed. McCain's pledge to run a positive campaign (which I believe he was sincere about) goes out the window with Mitt-bull off the leash.
On the other hand, it may make it easier for Independents, voting largely on integrity and a desire for a new type of politics, to settle on an Obama ticket.
Bob, Romney's ruthlessness in the primary may be what keeps him off the ticket. If McCain has the temper he is rumored to have, then he isn't going to pick someone he doesn't like personally.
You're being very optimistic if you think Mitt could bring in Michigan. Edwards couldn't even bring in SC in 2004, so I find it hard for Mitt to win this state just by being on the ticket since the state has voted Democrat in the last 4 elections.
I don't buy into the arguments that they won't vote for Barack because they didn't get to vote in the primary. Michigan is a Democrat state, sorry.

I think Lieberman is a real possibility.
Oh, and I don't think this puts Michigan in play for the GOP.
I mean think about it, weeks after the delegate chaos that enraged and polarized liberals statewide, Obama is still up 6-9 points over McCain.
The state has gone blue every election since '88.
I don't see Massachusetts Mitt turning that around.
