My Sit Down With Governor Strickland

Yesterday, Ben Keeler and I met with Ohio Governor Ted Strickland in his State House office. Governor Strickland told us that Lincoln found out he had been elected President of the United States in that office. There was a large bust of Lincoln in the corner. During our interview with the Governor, we discussed his plans to support Barack Obama this fall, his efforts to reach across the aisle, and the Great Lakes compact. Our video turned out a little dark due to sunlight from an open window behind us, but the governor's answers are still quite interesting. The full interviews will be posted as short YouTube clips on Politics.Ohio.com

What a cool experience! I'm sure that Governor Strickland is in the same place that myself and many other Democrats are currently in: We would have prefered Senator Clinton over Senator Obama, but are ready to turn the state blue and excited to get this campaign going.

Did you talk policy at all or just politics?

And I think that means that the Governor officially endorsed your friendship... Fancy.

We discussed both. I had the opportunity to ask the Governor how he plans to help Senator Obama win the State of Ohio. That clip will be posted on politics.ohio.com tomorrow.

That is sweet.

Keeler more embarrassed than ever for any claims of Blackwell winning.

Surreal. Was there any off-camera banter you can share?

After we finished he gave us a brief tour of his office and staff offices outside. I'd guess his office is at least 20x30 with a large vaulted ceiling. There are historical portraits around the top of the wall and he said that one is valued at $500,000. Color scheme was a lot of red and dark wood.

Aparently Governor Taft had worked on the top floor of the Riffe Center, which is a 30+ floor government office building next to the capital. Strickland moved his office into the capital so he could be more hands on. In addition, the office space for his staff looks more like a cramped campaign office than a the posh office space I expected. His Chief of Staff, Communications Director, Legal Counsel and so on work in a space with desks as close as Dwight Schrute's and Jim Halperin's on The Office. The Secretaries have their desks in the hallway. All that said, it is absolutely beautiful space and I'm at a loss to describe how cool it must be to work there. It is clear that work is getting done in that office.

Personally, Strickland made us feel welcome. I posted the short clip of him talking about Ben and I because I thought it was cool that he even bothered to do that at the end of our interview.
