Democrats Pick Up A Congressional Seat In MS

10 comments on this post

Last night, Mississippi held a special election for a Congressional District that had been touted as one of the most conservative in the country. Democrat Travis Childress defeated Republican Craig Davis 54% - 46%. Here are three spots run in the campaign. The first is a nice testimonial spot where Davis talks directly to voters. The second is a DCCC ad talking about Washington being out of touch. The third is an attack spot run against Childress trying to link him to Barack Obama. It is helpful to get a sense of what messages were being used on the air. More about the race.

My favorite line is in the DCCC ad (middle), the attack Davis for "driving in his SUV." Funny.

Kyle - this is interesting...I read an article by George Will over the weekend that referenced this special election as a possible harbinger for the November elections. Here's a link to the full article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/09/AR2008050902040.html?nav=hcmodule

There was an NPR report from two days ago describing a Childers' campaign event held at a local gas station highlighting the recent rise in prices at the pump. The line that jumped out at me: The gas was only $1.25 a gallon, and the campaign was paying the balance of the 3.55 regular price.

He bought votes. Is that a good thing?

I'm pretty sure that if someone was offering gas for $1.25, you'd be there. You may not vote for the guy later, but you'd sure buy the gas!

I wouldn't argue with you on that, anon...I just wonder why it's legal.

Usually at these types of events, it's free popcorn, boiled hot dogs, and watery Pepsi. If that's legal, then so should the subsidized gas.

Tough loss for Republicans, no other way to spin in it.

Since many of the voters who blindly bought into the Republican policy fairy tales of the last 8 years can't fire themselves, then I guess this will have to do.

As penance though, they can give up golf to support the troops.

The Republicans might take the presidency this fall, but they will incur gigantic losses in the House and Senate. The Republicans are scared out of there minds over the negative press GWB is receiving. I am a well informed conservative and I have absolutely no idea what the congressional republican message is.

They have so many issues that they are not capitalizing on. Energy independence, foreign policy appeasment, complicated tax code, illegal immigration etc....

If they do not come out swinging with a unified message then they will lose huge this November.
