You guys are such hardcore bloggers. Nothing gets our [pointing to harem of women] voluptuous blood pumping like two politically-minded stallions galloping off, Gallup poll in hand. Before you head back out to the front. One last rendezvous?
You know, it sounds like a LOT of fun -- but alas, after the holidays, I am out of vacation time, or I'd love to join you. But it sounds like an awesome idea! But I've been to the Iowa caucuses before, and it was democracy at its finest!
Godspeed, and safe travels (and watch out for those pesky Indiana State Troopers -- they can be nasty and unforgiving!)
Menk, Besides I'm not going just to "see" Obama, I've already seen him (and I've already read the "Stand up" speech that he's bound to give).
Like NH, I have this crazy vision of contributing a TCS piece of lit that has some impact, even if it's just one pixel in the 100 inch flat screen that is the Iowa caucus. In my eyes, in a race this tight if we sway one person, it's worth the wasted fossil fuels.
BTW What do you think of the handout? Is the message clear, and more importantly, is it the right message at the right time?
Not to spoil your enthusiasm, but you guys do realize that you'd need to leave on Saturday and catch the candidates at early rallies, perhaps even at churches, to have any shot at getting back to Akron on Sunday?
Des Moines will run you 12 hours if you hit traffic on 80, and you will, right about Gary and Joliet.
Perhaps the candidates will be in Davenport/Keokuk? Doubt it...
Yeah, I don't need to be back till Monday afternoon anyhow. Was hoping to catch Obama at one of four Sunday events: Knoxville, Newton, Indianola, Des Moines. We'll see.
It is really hard to turn down this kind of a trip, especially after we had such a good run in New Hampshire. Bob also does an excellent job of pitching anything he has set his mind to. I got up this morning and spent a good two hours on the computer doing research on travel options, candidate schedules, and Iowa in general. I decided that I just can't swing it this weekend.
Or unripe as the case may be. You sorry yet that you sent money to that douche Huckabee yet? I think you just bought him that funny orange hat and a box of shotgun shells.
Or unripe as the case may be. You sorry yet that you sent money to that douche Huckabee yet? I think you just bought him that funny orange hat and a box of shotgun shells.
Menk, To be clear I never donated money to Huckabee. I said that I might vote for him over Hillary, but I never donated to him.
I did donate to Ron Paul. Again any Republican Congressman who refused to authorize Bush's war (and there were only 6 of them) is donation-worthy in my book.
Plus I'd like to see a Libertarian Party emerge someday. So no regrets there.
Menk, Plus about the "box of shotgun shells" comment. I have nothing against responsible, licensed gun ownership. I love skeet shooting and would have been up for joining those guys in their funny orange hats.
Personally, unless we're talking about the undead, I don't care to shoot anything larger than a squirrel or a pigeon.
Annie, This is a really good time to ask you: what is legal?
For example the cash that I dropped on those stickers, was that legal? Does it depend if they explicitly promote a candidate? Is there a minimum amount that you need to report? Would my stickers have been considered to explicitly promote a candidate? If I had dropped the Obama quote it could have just as easily been a pro-Kucinich piece. Would that be fair game?
What about this Gallup Poll? Repeating a poll without any commentary is that fair game? Couldn't this just as easily be a pro-Giuliani / anti-Romney piece?
Because you are giving the stickers out as a benifit for giving money to Obama's campaign, they may be considered an in-kind contribution or independent expendature to the Obama campaign on your part.
You might want to give their campaign finance folks a call and ask them how they want to handle it.
I only gave (promised) stickers to two people specifically because they donated to Obama. 99% of the stickers I handed to random people in a Boston train station.
There must be some minimum that you have to spend before it's report-worthy. Right? $500 or something?
Dont call Obama's people!!! Then it'll be coordinated. Your best bet is to stay away.
The bumper stickers could be considered explicit, but the Gallop Poll isn't-- which is also why it is less influential (People dont read fine print: direct mail should be written to the 7th grade level. Sad, I know.)
Anyway, anything over $200 should be reported. Everything needs a disclaimer. If you plan on doing additional activities over the next 10 months, you should create your own committee. Gimme a call and we can talk about the details.
Annie, My own committee? [kneading chin] That sounds great. Then when I get in a political debate with someone and I'm getting my ass handed to me I can say:
"You probably don't even have a committee! Do you? [rolling eyes]"
Jokes aside, I would really like to know all that stuff. I figured that we shouldn't tell Obama's people when we were there. And we didn't.
If I have any other crazy idea in the next ten months I'll be sure to drop you a line. Thanks.

Ladies, ladies, ladies.
Neither Kyle, nor I are single, and heading back to the front... well... some people call us heroes, I say we're just doing our duty.
So take your red-hot passion for us and redirect it towards your nation, like the indiscriminate flame of a blowlamp.
[The harem bursts into the National Anthem as Bob and (possibly) Kyle tip their hats, kick their horses and ride West into a swirl of dust and grit]
Hmmm... 1400 miles.....56 gallons of gas to see Obama? Sorta kills the whole liberal/environmental position.
Menk,
You should know by now, I'm no tree hugger. I still drink my morning coffee in Styrofoam.
Quickly, some of my main issues are:
(1) the military-industrial complex, 2 trillion dollar war in iraq, gitmo, torture etc
(2) constitutional checks and balances, civil liberties, personal privacy, equal rights etc
(3) serious public education reform and campaign finance reform
You are right though, a harem of eco-friendly groupies might not be as impressed as I originally fantasized.

Let me be honest here. I should be ripe for the picking for Obama. I like the guy. But I think he's 4-8 years away from being a meaningful leader.
A Bloomberg/Hagel slate is more interesting to me right now. That'll probably change but for now that's where I'm at.
Menk,
In Washington, I think it's a fine line between being "seasoned" and being tainted.
The longer a politician has been in DC, the less likely that he/she is going to stand up against the status quo.
I think it's gonna take a little outside-the-beltway optimism and idealism to shake things up.
Obama/Bloomberg '08
I'm still trying to figure out what "voluptuous blood" is from your anaonymous groupie.
Seems I may have posted prematurely... Kyle is unable to attend Power Sunday.
Sigh.
For most people, Jesus is their co-pilot. Being the atheist that I am, I'm in dire need of a co-pilot.
Menk, you interested in seeing first hand if Obama is 4-8 years too ripe?
Not to spoil your enthusiasm, but you guys do realize that you'd need to leave on Saturday and catch the candidates at early rallies, perhaps even at churches, to have any shot at getting back to Akron on Sunday?

not Keokuk; meant to say Bettendorf.
I'll be in Indiana this weekend...maybe I'll see you on the freeway!

My apologies to Bob and our groupies.

Bob, if you passed out this piece, how will you pay for it?
Annie,
I would eat the cost, just like I did with the stickers.

Depending on how much you are going to spend, you really should report the cost as an independent expenditure with the FEC.

Annie do you know what the threshold is?
My mistake Robert. And I have no problems with guns either except when it turns into public dickswinging to
get votes.

Still no co-pilot.
Power Sunday is not looking good.
Last call.
Power Sunday has been canceled.
Note: If Hillary beats Obama in Iowa, 30% to 29.99%, I will shoot myself through the temple.
