Calming Down The Immigration Anger
I cannot find the full text of the speech, but I just heard Obama talking about illegal immigration. He has an approach that shows why Obama is the best candidate. Here is what his response to a question on immigration (paraphrased from my memory):"We can all agree, it is a problem that people come here in violation of the law. But before we lose our sanity on this issue, remember that a vast majority of these people are coming here to make a better life for their family. Then think about your family. But let me tell you something: if the minimum wage in Canada was $100 an hour, every American would at least think about going to Canada."
Again, that is paraphrasing, but the gist of it is that who wouldn't at least consider moving to Canada if there was a promise of quadrupling your pay. And no, this consideration does not address a solution to the immigration situation, so save the comments yelling for solutions. It is just a great example of him having a different way of thinking that I believe will unite most Americans - and why Barack Obama will be a great President.

It is amazing how so many rational people can entertain the two thoughts at once: (A) that their great grandparents came through Ellis Island in search of economic opportunity and a better life for their family, and (B) that underhanded Mexicans came through our porous border to snatch our jobs like zombies to feast on human brains.

I dont think anyone disagrees with your paraphrase of what he says. I havwe often said if I lived in Mexico and made $20 a week I would probably want the opportunity to come to the US as well. But as you said, that isnt really a solution there (what he said). If he has a solution I would want to hear that. Anyone can say that without presenting what he / she would do.
There's an old joke about a guy who goes to see a shrink and tells him that his brother thinks he's a chicken. The shrink says "well why don't you bring him in for treatment"?
The guy says " I would but I need the eggs".
It's somewhat the same with this country. It has an immigration problem, but the agri-businesses and the consumers need the eggs of cheap labor and the resulting cheaper grocery prices.

Enforce the law

The law should be enforced, but there should not be focused raids on people already here. Focus on the employers here and focus on the borders to prevent more.
How in the hell does that statement make Obama the best candidate? He offers no solution and only gives an explanation that everyone (at least for the most part) understands.
Also, wanting the law enforced is not showing contempt for these illegals. Of course I understand why they come here, who wouldn't if they were in that position. But do it LEGALLY.

Please spare your Ellis Island comparisons, those people came here legally and were searched like animals. They did not complain, worked hard, and, most importantly, did it legally.

I am on the Obamawagon!
Obama brings in independents and Republicans with rational comments about tough issues, instead of being divisive like most others.
The point that I think people are missing is that Obama didn't just sit on the fence saying "oh I understand both sides of this topic" or something generic like that, he gave an opinion like an acutal human being has, which politicians simply will not do out of fear of saying the wrong thing.

You are right. The Ellis Island comparison was a bit much. Legal is legal. Illegal is illegal. Point taken.
That said, I think that undocumented workers are too often painted as malicious thieves that steal our jobs.
No one vilifies the American small business owner who benefits from the cheaper labor or the American consumer who benefits from the cheaper service. It takes two to tango. If the American business owners simply refused to break the law (or the consumer was more vigilant when picking service-providers), there would be no stealing of jobs.
In fact, I'd argue that it's easier to enforce the law on the demand side, aka strict enforcement of hiring regulations and stiff penalties. But when was the last time you heard a politician say that the American employer is half the problem? Or even a part of the problem? Never. Unlike the 12 million illegals, those employers vote.
The dynamic is very similar to the War on Drugs, where we do little to curb American-side demand and instead try to swat an endless chain on suppliers. Last time I checked, that strategy has not even hampered the steady flow of narcotics into the states over the last 20 years.
Plus these "invasion models" tap into people's strongest primal fears and emotions: nationalism and racism. Emotions that politicians hijack and harness in their own unrelated pursuit of self aggrandizement.

The way things work today is the same as the old "Black Hand" extortion rackets:
Politicians create the public's perceived need for the politician to solve the perceived problems. If they were honest about this - they would just go ahead and throw a brick w/threatening note attached thru ones window....the blame game - same old scam
Difference today is that the politicians DO NOT know how to play the game correctly. In the past, the slimy politician would always keep up a pretense of duty and at least return something to the public. Today - they are such scumbags - only petty lip service of duty is observed.
Fact of the matter is the Canadian minimum wage isn't $100 per hour, so to me, his point, as a presidential candidate, is lame to the n-th degree. It would be a nice rebuttal in a bar conversation, but whatever...that's just me.
I agree with those that said he offers NO SOLUTION to the problem. As I've said before, the guy is all style with no substance.
I just want to hear someone...anyone...say that we need to enforce the LAWS WE HAVE ON THE BOOKS and clean house...including stiff fines to business that employ illegals. Agriculture will not crumble if cheap labor isn't picking beans.

The government made an attempt to enforce the law of the land but the court stepped in and said -"sorry , no can do". In a suit against the government by the unholly alliance of The Chamber of Commerce, the AFL-CIO and the ACLU a judge ruled it was illegal to use the IRS "do not match letters" to fire illegals or punish the employers. Eevryone won---the illegals,employers and the government(they cuold say "hey we tried"). As for the rest of us-who cares?
