So the CIA admits to:

Assassination plots!

Domestic spying!

Wiretapping!

Kidnapping!

The thing that blows my mind is how many people (especially conservatives) call a person a "conspiracy theorist" for suggesting that the CIA orchestrates things like ummm....assassination plots, domestic spying, wiretapping and kidnapping.

Bob,
Look at all the comments we've gotten on this site for saying the exact same things the CIA just said itself.
I could think of a few posts where we could do a little cut and paste from the comment section.....

One of my big questions for people who are paranoid of secret government power is who? Who in the government is going to spy on your phone calls? Who is going to use gun registration lists to take your guns? The list goes on.

It seems the answer is the CIA.

As a conservative(not to be confused with George Bush or his supporters) I dont doubt for a minute that these things have been going on for years. It is a dangerous world out there with many evil people and I find it sad that these activities may be necessary and fear that they may turned against our own citzens. But the alternative- an agency run by righouthous lawyers scares me more.

fred,
The alternative to abusing power is not abusing power.

Why?

Of course some of the things the CIA has done in the past are not right. If this release of information alerted anyone to what goes on in this world, they better start reading.

Look, trying to kill Castro or spying on some Russians is one thing.

Spying domestically on anti-war dissidents and civil rights campaigners is another.

I understand that we can't play nice with the evildoers. But there is a clear distinction between using the CIA to protect America from evildoers and using the CIA to protect your administration from criticism.

Surprised they released this stuff, and especially surprised that they released it now. If I were the evil head of the CIA this stuff would have been exposed in the months following 911

Bob, how many have accused people of being conspiracy theorists for suggesting that the CIA wiretaps, spys domestically (wire tapping would fall unde this, right?) and kidnapping?

Saying 911 is an inside job is one thing, but I thought it was common knowledge that the CIA investigated individuals with harsh views of our government.

Jeff,
Sure, no one is surprised to hear that the CIA is doing domestic wiretapping. But back in Feb of 2006, when the truth came out about Bush's illegal wiretaps we had a huge debate here at the site in which nearly half of the comments defended the unchecked wiretaps.

Regarding Bush's decision to sidestep the FISA court I said:

"unchecked government surveillance is inevitably abused"

This comment was shrugged off time and time again by Bush supporters (back in Feb 2006 there were a lot more of them) as unpatriotic paranoia.

Every time the CIA declassifies docs they give us fantastic examples of exactly what I'm paranoid about.

Did any of the regulars actually support illegal wire-tapping??!!

Either I can't remember that debate, or I was taking a break from the chief source.

I can't see why a liberal or a conservative would support that, any conservative aho argues such a position should never be allowed to use the wording of the constitution to justify their arguments.
