I Went To See Barack Obama Last Night

Obama In Cleveland 183-1Energy. Excitement. Front runner. Forget the polls, there is no candidate running for the presidency pulling off an event like Barack Obama did in Cleveland last night. Bob, Patty, Tim and I got there at 4:45 and got in the back of a line that was already 200 people long. The doors didn't open until 6:00 and much of the overflow crowd didn't get into the event. You would have thought it was the day before the election instead of a year before the primary.

As Democrats, we are used to diverse crowds at our public events, but this crowd was exceptional. Anyone who is questioning Obama's credibility with African-Americans is insane. Rather than the usual cattle call of area politicians warming up the crowd, the Obama campaign had a gospel choir, step marching band, drum line, and a poet from Morehouse College. There were two short introductions from the President of Tri-C and a group of mentored minority students who had earned scholarships from an area high school. It was great.

The crowd went nuts when Senator Obama came out. His remarks touched on red meat issues for Democrats: health care, education, the environment, and of course Iraq. On Iraq, Obama's plan calls for the redeployment of troops to begin in May of 2007 and the removal of all combat brigades by March 31, 2008. Obama also had a great section of his speech where he talked about "being an imperfect vessel" as a candidate. He told the crowd that he will make mistakes and stumble in his campaign, but no matter what happens he will continue to fight for what he believes is right. It was a great line and great strategy by his campaign.

Senator Obama concluded his remarks by talking about the day of his inauguration when he was first elected to the Illinois State Senate. On the way out to be sworn in, he was asked to take a picture and sign an autograph for an African-American woman who was 105 years old. He concluded his speech by talking about the conversation he had with this woman who had lived from a time of Jim Crow laws and slavery to a time where an African-American could be elected to the State Senate in Illinois. I cannot adequately describe what a powerful conclusion it was.

Fellow Democrats, I left the speech knowing he's ready to run. Let's pick a candidate we can get excited about for a change. Let's pick Barack Obama. More pictures I took. More pictures Tim took.

I bet he could fund it by ENDING THE WAR IN IRAQ!! We waste billions of dollars there every day. So, he could start there.

I love it how people are so skeptical of universal health care, but they're gung-ho for an illegal, unfunded war based on a lie.

Terra you are an idiot. Just a straight dumbass. I am more against this war than you can imagine, and the reason I asked about the financing is because I am trying to make up my mind between Obama and edwards-(who has outlined a plan for paying for it)
Due to my career choices healthcare will play a far more integral part of my life than yours, so I want to see a coherent plan for how they are going to fund it. Maybe if you spent more time thinking and analyzing you wouldn't always come off as such a brainless twit, but I am sure it is easier for you to just squeal andmake blanket accusations-

to Kyle and other people with a clue on this site my original queston stands and if you know the answer please share

t-dawg, did I call you names? No. So try to keep this at a grown-up level.

I suggested that Obama can pay for health care by using funding from the war (simplistic, but a decent point). Perhaps you could check his website, or e-mail his campaign. Additionally, people with insurance spend about $900 a year paying for people who don't - through increased hospital costs, etc. The money we spend for medicaid, private insurance, etc could be "rearranged" to cover everyone.

Additionally, I didn't lump you as people who are skeptical of universal health care. Right? Did you read what I wrote? Here's a hint: A period indicates a new thought - I put a period AND a line break in between my comment to you and my general observation about skeptics. This is an example of reading comprehension, or lack thereof.

Yes you did your post was directly alluding to mine-reading comprehension or lack thereof- You make useless assumptions and do nothing but make noise without any purpose. You could have attempted to answer my question but you chose to be rude, so you were treated in kind.

Terra.. I think people are very skeptical about universal health care due to the horror stories they hear from countries with said program. Also, the huge bureacracy that would come with it fuels the skeptics more..

Your obvious enthusiams is not quite 'over the top', but almost..........how about giving this campaign some more time to see how things progress? I want to see Obama 'flesh out' some of the programs he is proposing and hear what kinds of responses he'll get from other candidates.....particularly those 'repubs' out there.

It is exciting to have a candidate who is already generating such great excitement and charisma.
Let's hope it's not the 'peak' before any decline.

t-dawg, To help you understand, I will try to address comments to you by name, and then specifically to everyone else in the future. That would be a nice compromise, don't you think?

t-dawg and everyone, if someone asked how to fund health care and I answer "end the war in Iraq and use that money," I have usually gotten laughing agreement. You?

Terra - since a good portion fo the money we waste in Iraq is deficit spending, I don't think it is fair to say the money spent on the war would go to healthcare - you should look at it from an "all above the line" spending perspective since you has argued moultiple times in the past for no more deficit spending.

questions of how he is going to pay for stuff is fair. but Obama's record (illinois included) indicates an ability and plan to work together with both sides to gain consensus. that is what he will do (and has to, with 60 senate votes needed).

russ, your "points" are not worth addressing. your iraq stance is embarrassing.

Terra, i am not one to talk, but dont let these goofs get you worked up. people can always find away to criticize a far superior candidate like Obama, or far surperior ideas like universal care. but we dont need those guys to agree with us. we need normal, moderate people.

I threw out that "print more money comment" during the HC thread last week for two reasons;

1.) I was baiting anyone to give some deep thought to the consequences of what is happening currently: The Bush admin IS LITERALLY printing money (T Bills mostly and billions in currency that were stolen in Iraq) in order to continue this wild deficit spending jag.

2.) I was repeating what one of my Catholic schoolmates asked when we were about 12 yrs old and entirely ignorant of economics: "Why doesnt the government just print more money and give it to the poor?" Funny, it took over a week to raise a coherent response other than condescension toward old Petey

Recently , Greenspan uttered warnings about these grave deficits and me being raised by a Finance Man with GE, know well and thoroughly the risks and consequences of sunk asinine spending behavior as we are currently witnessing ala GW Bush.

Incidently, there has been some stuff written about the Chinese buying up our T bills and the inherent US security risks

I will sleep well tonight that at least, I inspired some thought on the subject

Thank you folks for the concern...and T-dog...take a lesson from these folks

I really dont know a whole lot about Obamas record or lack therof Chuck. But I do know that when Bush came to Washington he had a great record of working with both sides of the aisle to get things done, and Democrats basically stonewalled him except for a couple of exceptions. If a Democrat becomes president next, or a Republican for that matter, I dont think that being able to work with both sides is an attribute. It doesnt matter when the other side wont work with you, and say Obama wins, I dont think House / Senate Republicans have that short of a memory that they are going to go along with whatever. Or vice versa, I dont see the Democrats workign well with any R. My point is that I think the days of working with both sides is dead and gone, at least for the forseeable future.

Honest question to those who attended - were Mike White, Jane Campbell, or Frank Jackson there? Or would Obama not want to be seen with those three?

Thanks Chuck. It's funny that I was making an OBSERVATION about how people freak out about health care, but not deficit spending for a war, and it turns into some crazy misunderstanding and childish namecalling. I probably wouldn't suggest transferring irresponsible deficit spending from one thing to another, even if the other saves lives instead of killing people. I guess I'll have to be more clear with my line breaks, and label "observations" versus "policy prescriptions." Thanks everyone, for your guidance.

I e-mailed the Obama campaign to see how he plans to pay for universal health care. They get over 20,000 e-mails a week, so I'll let you know when I get a response.

One more comment...

I looked through the pictures and saw Bob with an Obama T-shirt. I got mine in the mail this weekend. I was very disappointed. It is really, really long. It is comparable to a jersey dress that you may see girls in rap videos wearing. Very disappointing. I know Barack wanted American-made, but maybe a Haitian made shirt would fit better?

I think Democrats are drastically underestimating the impact
Hillary Clinton can have on this race. Obama seems to be a solid candidate but I believe that Hillary may have a few intangibles that Barack does not. What we are seeing from him now may be a solid foundation for a future run at the office, but I think it would be irresponsible of Democrats to pass up the opportunity to elect a female president whom would have the support of former President Clinton. It's kind of a two for one deal. I like Barack's moxy, but I don't feel he is mature enough in his political experience to be a head of state. It may be exciting to plug in a rookie, but a veteran provides leadership. This team (the USA) needs leadership, guidance. We all want the rookie to score the touchdown but we need the veteran to show the rookie how to lead.

Wednesday, 28 February, 2007
Blogger TimFitz said...

The experience thing is a joke. He's a US Senator. He has the same amount of experience that Lincoln had(plus Obama went to school.) What about Bush's experience?
Anyways, Hilary is the worst possible candidate for the Dems - she is a moderate who will be attacked for being to liberal - why do we need that?
People are drawn to Obama because they are sick of the same old thing. Hilary represents the same old thing.

that HC inj America should be a priority...I think any less than that is shameful
