House Minority Leader, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Delay's indictment:
"The criminal indictment of Majority Leader Tom Delay is the latest example that Republicans in Congress are plagued by a culture of corruption at the expense of the American people."

Tom Delay's Response:
The prosecutor is a Democrat partisan.

FACT: This prosecutor has indicted 15 politicians for campaign corruption. 12 Democrats and 3 Republicans.
Sorry Tom

I just watched clips of Delay's press conference. He went down kicking, but he did go down. It will be interesting to see how the Delay story plays out in the lead up to the 2006 elections.

I'll gladly admit that statistic. We've got some bad apples on our side too. Money is a corrupting force for both political parties and is bad for our democracy.

Yes I did, but that statement needs some clarification. Click here to see what I'm getting at. Once on that page, click on each candidates name for a detailed profile of where their money comes from.

Tom Delay is being charged with campaign finance law conspiracy. Money in politics is corrupting. It makes these leaders of ours whores who take thier tops off for anyone willing to give them the large amounts of money needed to re-elect them. It means we elect those who are good at fundraising instead of those who are good leaders. It also makes incumbents too powerful. Incumbents stay in office because they have too much money and not because they have too many good ideas. Money in politics is bad, bad, bad.

Sure, there are bad apples in our party.

And money in politics is by far the most destructive force to our democracy. Clean elections should be priority #1. Every other positive hope we have (education, health care, etc) will follow.

So, how do you remove the money from politics? I have a feeling that no matter what campaign finance reform you implement politicians will still be heavily influenced by money, although it may take on a more indirect form. This is not to say that we should just give up. I'm just genuinely curious as to how you can actually eliminate the influence of money. Keep in mind, too, that both the people with money and the politicians that profit from it have heavy incentives to keep the system the way it is...
