"Christians" Speak Out

"Let's be clear, a minority of liberal senators is kowtowing to the demands of leftwing interest groups. These groups and their causes -- abortion on demand, rampant obscenity, same-sex "marriage" -- lack popular support and require a politicized judiciary to impose their agenda. They fear votes and they fear the American people acting through their elected officials. They want judges who are under their heel, not under the Constitution." - Tony Perkins, President, Family Research Council
I like how Tony Perkins uses quotation marks around "marriage" in his statement to be condescending. Here is my attempt at his technique: Gay people really anger some "Christians" in this country.
Justice Sunday was yesterday. It was a televised event run by the Family Research Council that reached 61 million Americans. (see commercial here) The point was to bring attention to 10 federal court nominees who have not been confirmed. It also presented an opportunity to bring more attention to the culture of life social agenda. These type of events aren't that rare as politicians and preachers become harder to tell apart. What is rare is for the Senate Majority Leader to participate in this kind of event. Senator Bill Frist, M.D. (R-TN) sent a video taped message to the event to be played for the crowd. It has been a public relations disaster for Frist as he tries to distance himself from the event.
As you can see, this kid is holding a gavel to represent being a judge and a bible to show his faith. "He should not have to choose." YES HE SHOULD HAVE TO CHOOSE AND OUR FOUNDING FATHERS WENT OUT OF THERE WAY TO MAKE THAT POINT. "that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion, and that the same shall in nowise diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capacities." - THOMAS JEFFERSON.When you become a judge, faith may guide your life, but the constitution should guide your work in a country that prides itself on freedom of religion.
I'm happy to see the "Christian" fundamentalists out and about.
Schiavo. John Bolton. Social Security.
How are the President's polling numbers doing?
44% approve.

Kyle - I think we need to throw some Perkins-ian quotation marks around "culture of life" as well...when the party in charge is pro-death penalty, likes to start wars in other countries, and is making strides toward the decimation of social programs that support the health and welfare of our children and most vulnerable, claiming you support a "culture of life" is absolutely laughable.
Kids don't care about this. Rush said they only care about "BJ's". Because of Clinton.
Great post.
I guess if I had three wishes, one might be to bring our forefathers back from the grave just so they can tell these guys how un-American they really are. (I'm sure they'd have some words with the DEMs as well.)
Big ups to TJ (Thomas Jefferson) wherever you are.
You know, people are always saying that the DEMs are never proposing idea, just whinning...and I guess that's true to a certain extent.
Well, my proposal is this...we need to push the Constitution with the same pride and certainty and consistency that they push the Bible.
We need to constantly remind the people about the intentions of our forefathers, the REASONS that half the Bill of Rights deals with the Rights of the Accused and explain why protecting the freedom of speech of immoral sinners is protecting your own...but most importnatly, MOST IMPORTANTLY, why we have such carefully measured checks and balances between the branches of government and why we cant EVER let them get overlooked by EITHER side of the isle. Defending your country isnt just shipping off to fight in the desert...it's protecting these ideals...paying attention and holding our elected politicans accountable with our voices and our votes.
The Bible is long and no fun to read (I tried a bit recently). The Constitution, on the other hand, is cliff-note size!! Let's sex it up or dumb it down or get Morgan Freeman to explain it in the next film that he plays the prez...but somehow, SOMEHOW we need to get Americans thinking again about just what it means to be American and why our nation really is great.
Points well made..... but let's carry it further. The '04 election seems to have give the right wing not only one hell of a boost, but also license to push the fringes of extremism towards the 'center' of political acceptance as if
it's the 'norm' that the majority of Americans accept. Where are the moderates ? ......and I'am not talking about moderate Democrates, but MODERATE Republicans !!
Hey......Laura Bush polls in at 85%........and I'vd heard some of the Bushie pundits suggest that her numbers are
also a reflection of his popularity. You think her losing some weight and looking good these days has anything to do with it ?? ......and by the way, where are the twins these days ? They've certainly managed to bury them, or at least keep them out of the Globe and the Star.
Damn....its' such fun reading too........
